Well, there is only so much shields can do against magic! I imagine they help, but my fighting style definitely does not suit carrying a shield around that would be sturdy enough for that sort of thing.

In fact, when you think about it, magic is not all that different from arrows. I imagine it might just be different for people when they are not quite as used to magic, but I have seen one of my friends cast spells since we were very young. I grew up with it, even though I have never used it myself.
That's a good point, actually. They're both projectiles, and slower moving than a bullet. At least, that's true if we're talking about, say, throwing a fireball or a lightning bolt. It doesn't account for other magics like mind control.
The latter sort of magic is actually much less common where I come from.
I never really thought much about that before now, in fact. The other forms of magic are incredibly common. My friends use it, I have met many a foe on the battlefield who used it.. I would say fire, lightning and wind magic are all forms of magic I have seen very often. Even dark magic, but that is mostly just limited to using that dark energy to harm people physically on the battlefield.
I only know of one person capable of magic beyond that, and he is a very, very evil man.
